I must clarify, one is the principles of Islam and the other are the practice
and conduct of Muslims. If the practice and conduct of Muslims do not conform to
Islam that is not Islam. Let us judge Islam by its principles.

No Compulsion in Religion
Compulsion is incompatible with
religion because religion depends upon faith and will, and that it would be
meaningless if religion is induced by force. Truth and Error have been so
clearly shown up by the Infinite Mercy and Bounty of Almighty Allah Jallah
Wa’ala that there should be no doubt whatsoever in the minds of any persons of
goodwill as to the fundamentals of faith for Almighty Allah’s protection is
continuous, and His Plan is always to lead us from the depths of darkness into
the clearest light.

When the first hightide of Islam passed away; when ignorance
of divine guidance resumed its sway after being deposed by Islam; when Satan
shook the dust of battle from his shoulders, arose and summoned his followers
who again held the reins of power - when all of this happened the life of
mankind did not return to the state it had been in during the previous period of
ignorance. Islam was there, even if it had retreated from its position of
dominance in the world. It had left behind it broad traces, significant
principles that had become established in human life and familiar to people.
They had lost the strangeness with which they had first been received when
proclaimed by Islam. These broad traces and significant principles we wish to
indicate briefly in this treatise.

Merits of Islam
All the principles and rules of Islam are most
reasonable and proved. The Ulema (learned men) have written definite
books on the principles and beliefs of the shariat Islamia and given
the rational proofs, the causes, the secrets, expediencies of its
provisions and the rules. In these books the principles and rules of
Islam have been shown to be according to sound reason, right
understanding and true nature.

The world of Islam is passing through a crisis
of confidence. However, unpalatable it may be, the truth remains that
the qualities of self-awareness and self-reliance are not the
distinguishing features of Muslims in any part of the world today.

Protection of Faith Must Take Precedence
First of all, I will ask you earnestly to protect the wealth
of Islam you possess. Do not lose it at any cost. If you realised how short was
the life of world and how long the life of futurity and through what stages were
you going to pass in the Hereafter, your hair would stand on end. Who will be
more unfortunate than ourselves if we did everything here in America but allowed
the provision of the fear of God and solicitiude for the Hereafter to go to
waste
